Stage 2 Welding and Fabrication

Year 12 Welding and Fabrication (Industry and Entrepreneurial Solutions)

Subject Overview

In Design, Technology, and Engineering students use design and realisation process to engineer solutions for the development of products or systems.

The subject provides a flexible framework that encourages students to be creative, innovative, and enterprising in their chosen context. They apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills and incorporate technologies to address design problems and challenges.

Welding and Fabricating is a 20-credit subject that is concerned with the study of traditional and contemporary methods of manufacturing products.

Topics may include:

  • Metal lathe machining
  • MIG welding
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Application of welding and fabrication skills
  • Project design and construction

Assessment:

Specialised Skills Task

Students develop knowledge and skills through completing these specialised skills tasks.

  • Creating a product from a working drawing
  • Specialised Skills task using MIG welders and a Metal Lathe.

Design Process and Solution

Part 1 – Design development

Students show evidence of key design phases of investigation and analysis, design development, and planning when creating a folio of their choice of metal product.

Part 2 – Solution realisation

Students create and evaluate the choice metal product from Part 1. The student provides evidence of the solution in the form of images or a video recording and evaluates the completed solution.

Resource Study

Part 1 – Students investigate and analyse the functional characteristics and properties of two or more materials or components that they are considering for use in the creation of their solution.

Part 2 – Students investigate and analyse ethical, legal, economic, and/or sustainability issues related to their solution.

Cost:

There is a subject fee of $100.00 to cover some consumables required during practical classes. Students may be required to purchase additional materials for their major project if they exhaust their $100.00 materials fee.

Additional Information:

Students can select Stage 2 Welding and Fabrication if they achieved a C grade or higher in either Stage 1 Furniture Construction or Stage 1 Welding and Fabricating.
