Year 12 Child Studies

Subject Overview

This subject focuses on children and their development from conception to 8 years of age. Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of young children through individual, collaborative, and practical learning. They explore concepts such as the development, needs, and rights of children, the value of play, concepts of childhood and families, and the roles of parents and caregivers. They also consider the importance of behaviour management, child nutrition, and the health and well-being of children.

This subject is well suited to students who have an interest in pursuing child-related careers such as childcare, education, nursing, or allied health-related professions. It is also for students who find this area of study interesting. There is scope in this subject to engage with the local community centre, the Children’s Centre and Primary School.

Topics may include:
The topics that might be covered in this course include, but are not limited to, the following broad topic headings:

  • Contemporary and Future Issues related to children’s development
  • Economic and Environmental Influences in children’s lives
  • The role that political, sociocultural and technological influences have on families and raising children

Assessment:
AT1: Practical activities (minimum of three)
AT2: Group activities (minimum of one)
AT3: One Individual Investigation

Cost:
There will be a cost of $40 to cover excursions and materials for practical activities.

Additional Information:
All students are eligible to select Child Studies at Stage 2, even if they did not study Child Studies in Year 11 – Stage 1.
