Year 11 Society and Culture

Subject Overview

In this subject, students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary social and cultural issues, in local and global contexts. Students will also study social and environmental change, focusing on social movements across the world and how these begin and spread. In this subject and students will look at how people and communities impact the environment in which we live. A key focus will be connection between societies, environments and cultures.

  • Popular culture
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Relationships between societies and natural environments
  • The social impacts of environmentally sustainable and unsustainable practices
  • Contemporary First Nations issues
  • The diversity of the Asia-Pacific region
  • Refugee and migrant experiences
  • Peace and conflict

Topics will be selected based on student interest and current world issues.

Assessment

Students will complete at least three assignments in this subject. There are three assessment types at Stage 1 for Society and Culture. These are:

  • Source Analysis
  • Group Activity
  • Investigation

We will have at least one task that focusses on a contemporary Australian issue and at least one task that focusses on a global, contemporary issue.

Cost

There is a subject fee of $30.00 to cover excursion expenses.
