Stage 1 Kurrangk Studies
Year 11 Kurrangk Studies
Subject Overview
This subject offers students an in-depth exploration of the Coorong (Kurrangk in Ngarrindjeri language, meaning ‘narrow neck’), a unique and ecologically significant region in South Australia. Through a multidisciplinary lens, students will delve into the rich tapestry of the Coorong’s history, biology, and ecology, understanding its importance as a natural habitat and its role in Indigenous culture. The course will examine the evolution of the landscape, the diversity of flora and fauna, and the complex ecosystems that define the region.
Field trips, case studies, and project-based learning will provide students with hands-on experience. They will emerge with a comprehensive understanding of the Coorong’s significance and the skills to critically analyse environmental management practices. This subject will empower students to contribute thoughtfully to discussions on conservation and sustainable development in the Coorong and similar ecosystems globally.
Topics may include:
- The impact of human activity
- The impact on tourism and the environment
- Current usage of the Coorong – challenges and opportunities
- Conservation efforts and econmic benefits – managing sustainability
Assessment
The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning:
Assessment Type 1: Practical Exploration
- Evidence of the practical exploration may be presented in a range of forms including but not limited to journals, blogs, reports, photo stories, visual or audio recordings, oral presentations, skills demonstrations, and reviews. The evidence must be generated by the student. Multimodal evidence is encouraged.
Assessment Type 2: Connections
- Students undertake activities that encourage them to make connections between the Coorong and their development of a capability.
Assessment Type 3: Personal Venture
- The personal venture is an opportunity for students to explore an area of the Coorong that is of interest to them. They investigate their area of interest by identifying, exploring, and communicating relevant information, concepts, and ideas.
