Year 11 Furniture Construction
Year 11 Furniture Construction (Material Solutions)
Subject Overview
In Design, Technology, and Engineering, students use a design process to create solutions for developing products or systems.
The subject encourages creativity, innovation, and enterprise. Students apply critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and technologies to address design challenges. They learn interdisciplinary skills and engage in individual and inquiry-based learning. This provides opportunities to use engineering processes and new technologies. Furniture Construction is concerned with the study of traditional and contemporary methods of manufacturing cabinet articles of furniture.
Topics:
Specialised Skills Task 30%
Students develop knowledge and skills through completing these specialised skills tasks:
- Creating a product from a working drawing
- Computer Aided Drawing task (produce a working drawing of their choice product)
- Specialised Skills task using basic static machines
Design Process and Solution
Part 1 – Design development 20%
Students show evidence of key design phases of investigation and analysis, design development, and planning when creating a folio of their major product.
Part 2 – Solution realisation 50%
Students create and evaluate their major product which includes a door or drawer from Part 1. The student provides evidence of the solution in the form of images or a video recording and evaluates the completed solution.
Assessment
Assessment is school based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment design criteria areas:
- Investigation and Analysis
- Design Development and Planning
- Production
- Evaluation
Additional Information
Knowledge and understanding of machine use, techniques, safety and WHS underpin all aspects of the course. Please refer to SACE website info for Design and Technology.
Furniture Construction is a full-year 20-credit subject.
There is a subject fee of $100.00 to cover some consumables required during practical classes. Students may be required to purchase additional materials for their major project if they exhaust their $50.00 materials fee.
