Course Description

Child Studies focuses on children and their development from conception to 8 years and issues related to the growth, health, and well-being of children. Students examine diverse attitudes, values, and beliefs about childhood and the care of children, the nature of contemporary families, and the changing roles of children in a contemporary consumer society. 

This subject can prepare students for work experience or future employment in a field with a child focus such as, childcare, education, health etc. This subject is for any students that have an interest in learning more about child development, families, social structures and other child and family related topics. 

Throughout this subject there may be opportunities for students to connect with community groups, schools and children’s centres.  

Topics may include:

The three areas of study for this subject are:

  • The nature of childhood and the socialisation and development of children
  • Children in wider society
  • Children, rights and safety

Topics within these areas of study may include the following: 

  • The development, needs, and rights of children
  • The value of play
  • Concepts of childhood and families
  • The roles of parents and caregivers
  • The importance of behaviour management, child nutrition, and the health and wellbeing of children.

Assessment:  

Students will complete at least three assignments in this subject. There are three assessment types at Stage 1 for Child Studies. These are:

  • Practical Activity
  • Group Activity
  • Investigation

Additional Information:

There is a subject fee of $30.00 to cover excursion expenses.
