English

At Year 10, English focuses on developing student knowledge and skills in reading, writing, analysing, listening and creating texts. English at Year 10 branches out to two variations, Essential English and English

 

In Semester 1, all students will study English and then move into either Essential English or English depending on teacher recommendations.

 

Students will be guided by their Connect Teacher and English Teacher to make a decision as to what area of English they should be studying at Year 10 in Semester 2.

Year 10 English

Course Description

In Year 10 English students interact with peers, teachers, individuals, groups and community members in a range of face-to-face and online/virtual environments. They experience learning in familiar and unfamiliar contexts, including local community, vocational and global contexts. Students create a range of imaginative, informative and persuasive types of texts including narratives, procedures, performances, reports, discussions, literary analyses, transformations of texts and reviews. 

This subject is for those students who would like to continue their English through until the end of Year 12 and for those students who are thinking about a pathway to higher education. 

Topics may include: 

  • Narrative
  • Poetry
  • Text Structure

Assessment

In the first semester, students will focus on a mixture of formative and summative tasks before completing the following:

  • Text analysis and test creation: Narrative writing
  • Poetry analysis and poetry creation
  • Essay responses to class texts

Year 10 Essential English

Course Description

Year 10 Essential English will focus on developing student knowledge, understanding and skills in reading, writing, analysing, listening and creating texts. There is a focus on teaching strategies to further improve learning in core English skills including grammar, spelling and punctuation. This subject is for those students who would like to continue their English learning until the end of Year 11 and students who are planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocational pathways. 

Topics may include: 

  • Film studies
  • Modern poetry texts – SLAM poetry
  • Novel studies

Assessment

In the first semester, students will focus on a mixture of formative and summative tasks before completing the following:

  • Text analysis and test creation: Narrative writing
  • Film analysis
  • Essay responses to class texts
